Toni Bernhand, J.D. has an interesting article in Psychology Today entitled “Mental Contrasting: A Smart Alternative to Positive Thinking.” Ms. Bernhard is building on the work of Gabriele Oettingen, a professor at New York University and the University of Hamburg. They both highlight that there is a downside to “the power of positive thinking” as it relates to goals and achieving results. In summary, the research showed that “Positive thinking fools our minds into perceiving that we’ve already attained our goal, slackening our readiness to pursue it.”
To understand mental contracting and positive thinking, it is best to think of a coin. A coin is a stamped piece of metal with images on both sides of the surface. It value is based upon images being on BOTH sides of the coin. Mental Contrasting is the other side of the coin to positive thinking.
Mental Contrasting is the an honest interaction with the challenges and obstacles that will arise in moving towards achieving a goal. By looking at both sides of the “coin”, we are more motivated and engaged to achieve the goal and not be surprised or derailed when obstacles arise. Honestly, we are better prepared to manage the anticipated obstacles and unanticipated obstacles.

Hope bounds that “This is going to be great!” Only to come crashing into the reality: this is not home, I’m not in control, these people are not my family, I am afraid and a whole lot more.
